I’ve been designing and working with light since I was a child. Back then, my bedroom was my workshop. I would explore the potential of materials around me, their structure, resistance, and their logical form. Later on, I studied product design in Barcelona, moved to New York, and worked for firms such as Vignelli Associates and Ralph Lauren. During that period, I learned how to appreciate the different aspects of design, the relationship between space, light, and human perceptions. When I moved back to Barcelona in 1996, I opened my own studio and worked on projects for the retail and hospitality industry. In 2007, in partnership with Skye Maunsell Studio, I transitioned to residential projects and lighting products. Our office, called Montoya, was conceived as a creative nexus, a communal space where professionals from various disciplines can share their knowledge and develop ideas. Our approach to each project is always the same. Whether it’s an object, a building, or a landscape, for us design is about finding ways to preserve the authenticity and singularity of the human experience.
